Three year old Lenai Arina was off in the little lot a block away from her house. She was picking herbs for Papa again. He was the best ninja she had ever seen, not that she had seen many but he was still the best. He didn't want her to be a ninja, but she was gonna be just like Papa and like he had said to mama, "She's a precocious child. She'll be what she likes, and there's not much we can do about it but see that she's the best she can be." And then he had laughed. He often laughed at the things she said, which puzzled her but she wasn't worried. He always hugged her after that, which meant she had done something good.
He was a poison ninja, which was just what Arina wanted to be as well. It wasn't just Papa, she loved the plants and they often smelled nice, althought she wasn't silly enough to try to eat them.
Nika, the girl who lived down the street and who's papa was also a ninja, said that her papa said poison ninjas weren't as strong as others and were cheating. She had gotten mad and punched Nika then, and then decided Nika was a sissy because instead of trying to hit her back Nika had run home crying. She had come back with her papa and Arina's mama and papa, and told them and Arina told everyone what had happened. Papa got a funny look on his face and laughed. Nika's papa got a different look on his face and swatted Nika for insulting people. Arina had gotten swatted too, but Papa had hugged her afterward so that was alright.
Mama was a good mother, not a ninja but a nice mama and Arina loved her dearly as all daughters are supposed to, but if anyone had asked Arina was her father's girl entirely.
Mama had recently gotten very round and Papa had said that there was a baby in there and she was going to have a baby brother or sister very soon. Mama had allowed Arina to feel the baby kick and Arina came away duely impressed, and very pleased. A baby would mean that she wouldn't have to play with that sissy Nika anymore. She was gathering herbs to help Mama with her sickness she got sometimes, but Arina thought a little trouble was fair trade for a new baby, when she heard something crack.
She ran home as fast as her little legs could carry her, and came in to Papa going out the door. "There's trouble Rina," he said, hoisting her up to kiss her, "We've got someone not very nice that Papa has to go fight." "But I'm scared Papa," she said, looking out the window, "There's smoke." Her papa looked at that and his face grew hard. Her mama came out and hugged her tightly, and Arina buried her face in her mother's shoulder.
"Now Rina," her papa said gently, "You want to be a ninja, don't you? Ninja have to be strong. Can you be strong for your papa?" "Yes Papa." She closed her emotions like he had taught her to and became calm. "Good girl," he said smiling, "I'll be back soon. Promise."
He left, and after a long minute there were sounds of fighting and the smell of smoke grew. Her mother grew very calm and put her hand where the baby was supposed to be. "Rina," she said carefully, "Go out back to the herb cellar and stay there until I tell you." "But why Mama?" Arina protested. "Just do it dear, I'll explain later." Arina pouted, but did as she was told.
She opened the door to the little cellar and climbed in, but turned around and kept it open slightly so she could see. Someone went into her house and there was a loud noise that made her heart nearly stop. That sound wasn't human. Whoever it was walked out and laughed. Arina's blood froze. It was...Bad seemed too nice a term to describe it. It was evil.
The man left quickly after that, and Arina climbed out of her little hidey-hole. Her house was still up, but it was on fire. A thought seized her mind. Her mama was still in that house! She raced in and went through every room until she found her. The body she found was on fire, with a kunai through the lower belly. Whoever that had been hadn't just killed her mama. He had killed her mama and the baby in one blow.
Arina's face grew tight and cold. She walked out of the house in a daze, and through the destruction until she came upon a body she recognized. It was her papa. He had weapons sticking out of him all over, and she knelt down and set herself to the long task of pulling them all out. Only when she was finished, with his face oddly seeming like it was just about to smile at her again, did she scream.
They found her still there a day later. She didn't remember her voice giving out, still screaming with no sound attatched.. She didn't remember blacking out after awhile, or being found. Arina woke up in a hospital, with burns she didn't remember getting being treated. She didn't care. Her mama, her sibling, and her hero were dead. And there was nothing left.
