This was back long before Maeko was born; they fled the ninja villages soon after the wars end. Her family moves location every year sticking to the forests mostly or traveling at night.
They have traversed through most of the countries only stopped in their roving’s by nature. Sometime’s they are temporally made to in one place by the cold grip winter in the forests and mountains or the heat of the summer sun in the deserts, but that is life. By this consequence Maeko has never set foot in a city; or even seen one. They live off the land.

personal history
Schooling for maeko went like this. First you learn things by hand and then once you’ve master the little things you moved on to jutsus. One of the first things maeko learned as a child was how to fetch water or gather fire wood. These were essential for working life. Then after that she learned that you could get more work done if you used a jutsu called shadow clone. She learned of this at 8 years of age. That was the average for starting school in the family.
It was a whole new game from there on out. Her whole family pitched in like always and the new things to learn happened all most every day. Thing seemed to move by slowly for her that maeko wondered sometimes how she was ever going to learn more than just the basics. She wasn’t being challenged by the work but was made to repeat it over and over. When she informed her parents they just laughed and patted her head. Then proceeded to tell her; to run along and help her aunts with the break down of the fall camp. They were moving to there winter site. Winter meant snow and cold and maeko was looking for ward to it.
Maeko learned more complex things including basic herb lore and cooking at nine years old. Much of this was learned by watching her old cousins working. And of course periodically asking questions and generally showing in interest in learning helps. Maeko by this time had graduated to tasks with more reasonability; leading the younger ones to and from camp on foraging parties for example but not by herself. She still needed one of the older boys to go with them as escorts and guards.
Just before maeko 10th birthday on one such party; they got into some trouble. They had gotten caught out in freak thunder storm and were forced to take shelter through the night under a tree. When they awoke the next morning they were entirely turned around and couldn’t fallow their own tracks back as the rain had washed them out.
Maeko and her brother who was acting as guide disagreed on the direction they had come from. He said north she said west. So they did the smart thing and just stayed put. they were found later that day. Maeko and her brother were yelled at for two whole hours for not coming home before dark.

Role-Play Example: (I’m proud of this post from my Haku rp so this is the one I’ll use)
Haku shrugged at Taka’s indifference towards him and his actions. Though he was acting weird just now. I wonder what’s up with him. Maybe Maakun knows. Perhaps I should go ask him.
The brothers were an enigma to him. He could never figure out what they had in common if any thing. They just seemed so different. Haku didn’t have any brothers or sisters himself but loved his mother and respected his father; until that horrible Day. The day his life had changed. Haku quickly snapped back to the present.
“Shouldn’t you be there too, Taka? Master Zabuza *might* not be pleased with you if you don’t at least practice. I know he wants me to keep up my skills, all of them.” Haku was tempted to leave right then to practice as Instructed, he wanted to perfect his speed with his mirrors. Both making them and traveling between them.
This would allow him to contain and control the demonic ice the ability of himself and his mother all that remained of his clan. And now just him; he was the last of clan for which he had no name. Enough nostalgia he thought annoyed at him self.
“See you there.” Haku shifted to leave and walked down the hall preformed several hand seals in rapid secession with only one hand. A sheet of ice leapt up spontaneously front the floor in front of him. He smiled wirily as he focused on where he wanted the second sheet of ice to come out.
This would test his concentration and accuracy at long distance and he just want to see if he could pull this off without seeing the place where it would land. He wanted to ‘grow’ in the training room and repeat the hand seals. Haku felt it, the chakra feeding the ice shift slightly as he took on another mirror and linked it with the first.
He then stepped up to the mirror in front of him and moved into it as though it was water; but it wasn’t any less solid than before. It was like nothing he had ever done before when he had first tried this technique. Haku was intrigued by ‘the corridor’ as he called it when he past through one mirror into another.
It was like walk in a hall of glass that seemed to go on forever, while the actual shift takes usually only 30 seconds right now. He hoped to cut that time in half.
Before he knew it he was standing inside the other mirror. Haku was watching Maakun fighting with two clones… it had taken over 2 minutes to get there for the other end on the compound. He was frowning and a bit winded but pleased he could get there from here so to speak.
“Hello Maakun. Having any luck working out the kinks?” Haku spoke from the relative safety of the ice mirror as he was winded and Maakun could hit hard, if he wanted to. He tilted head and waved at Maakun, his face calm.
